iCloud sync

Your recipes, journal, favorites and bar follow you to every iPhone and iPad signed in to the same Apple Account.

Sakaba has no account of its own. It keeps your things in sync through your own iCloud, so every iPhone and iPad signed in to the same Apple Account sees the same recipes, journal and bar. There’s nothing to set up beyond iCloud itself.

What syncs

  • Your own recipes, with their ingredients, steps and photos.
  • Your tasting journal: every entry with its rating, notes, photo and the recipe as you poured it.
  • Favorites, both library recipes and your own.
  • My Bar: the bottles you’ve ticked.
  • The shopping list.

Your recipes, journal and favorites are stored in your private iCloud database. My Bar and the shopping list use a separate, smaller part of iCloud, so they can arrive at a slightly different time.

What stays on each device

  • Your settings: Measurement, Language, Notifications, Theme, Accent and App icon.
  • Servings and amount changes you make on a recipe page. See Servings and scaling.
  • Recent searches and the sort order you chose for each list.

Sakaba Plus doesn’t travel through iCloud either. It comes from the App Store with your Apple Account; see Restore purchases.

Turn sync on

Sync needs two things on each device:

  • You’re signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account.
  • iCloud is on for Sakaba. Check in the Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud, and find Sakaba in the list of apps using iCloud.

If iCloud is off, Sakaba works exactly the same, and your data stays on that device.

Set up a new device

Install Sakaba, make sure you’re signed in to the same Apple Account, and open the app. Your recipes, journal, favorites, bar and list download from iCloud.

On a brand-new install, My Bar starts with a set of common bottles already ticked. When your own bar arrives from iCloud, it replaces that starter set. Wait until you see your bar before you tick or untick anything, because a change made first can replace the bar stored in iCloud.

When sync seems slow

Sakaba has no sync button and no sync status; iCloud decides when changes move. If something hasn’t shown up yet:

  • Make sure both devices are online.
  • Open Sakaba on the device that made the change, then on the other one.
  • Give it time. A large journal with many photos takes longer to arrive.
  • Check that both devices use the same Apple Account and have iCloud on for Sakaba.

Reinstalling

Deleting the app removes its data from that device only. When you install Sakaba again with iCloud on, your recipes, journal, favorites, bar and shopping list come back from iCloud. Your settings and recipe-page adjustments don’t, because they were never in iCloud.

Good to know

  • Deleting syncs too. Delete a recipe or a journal entry, or clear your bar, and it’s gone on your other devices as well. See Delete your data.
  • A file of your own. With Sakaba Plus you can also save everything to a backup file. See Back up and restore your data.
  • “Couldn’t open your library.” If you see this alert, see Troubleshooting.
